Emergency Response
For more than a decade, Syria Relief has been at the forefront of emergency humanitarian response in Syria. Throughout this extended period of crisis, we have consistently demonstrated our ability to respond effectively to critical situations. These emergencies often arise in the wake of bombings and require immediate medical relief.
Due to the nature of our work, our team is rigorously trained to respond effectively to emergency situations. Our teams have undergone comprehensive training in crisis management, ensuring our readiness to handle diverse emergency scenarios. Regrettably, in times of armed conflict, the demand for urgent humanitarian relief becomes all the more imperative.
Our emergency response efforts encompass a wide spectrum of services:
Medical Emergency Support: We establish and reinforce medical facilities, deliver vital medical supplies, and provide life-saving care to the wounded.
Food Aid: We ensure that nutritious food reaches those in dire need, addressing hunger in crisis-stricken regions. Many civilians who are newly displaced or have escaped violence are often food-insecure. We maintain emergency food supplies to address this need.
Shelter and Non-food Items: Our efforts include providing emergency shelter materials, blankets, clothing, and other essential non-food items to those displaced by conflict.
Adapting to Evolving Crises
Throughout our 13-year presence in Syria, we have continuously adapted to evolving crisis situations. This includes:
Responding to Mass Displacements: We deliver immediate relief to communities facing large-scale displacements due to conflict escalations.
Handling Natural Disasters: We respond promptly to natural disasters within Syria's borders, extending emergency assistance to affected populations. This was evident in our 2023 earthquake response.
Navigating Access Challenges: We overcome access challenges in conflict-affected areas through negotiations and perseverance. We are committed to establishing sustainable channels for the passage of aid through Syria. In our 2023 report, we found that Syrians are concerned about the origins of aid, and we work diligently to facilitate ethical pathways for aid delivery.
During the Turkey-Syria Earthquakes, our teams were mobilised and deployed to the regions most severely impacted by the disaster. On the ground, we executed a timely and strategic delivery of emergency aid to alleviate the suffering of those affected by the crisis.
Turkey Syria Earthquake response and rehabilitation
The February 2023 earthquakes claimed the lives of 57,000 and more than 350,000 buildings destroyed or damaged, the impact has been staggering. Nearly 18 million people have borne the direct brunt of the quake's aftermath.
Amidst this crisis, our teams were on the ground to providing emergency supplies and support to those in need. We continue to stand firmly committed to providing ongoing assistance and long-term support to those affected by the earthquake.
At just five years old, young Marya experienced the devastating loss of her family's home to the earthquake. The impact of such a traumatic event weighed heavily on her parents as they could not provide shelter and protection for their young children. However, through our shelter project this year, we made it our priority to support families like Marya's who had lost their homes.
Our teams on the ground worked to rehouse many families effected by the earthquake and provide them with a safe and secure environment to rebuild their lives. Now, Marya and her family have found a new place to call home, and this is just the beginning of their journey towards a better life.
By providing them with the foundations of a stable home, we aim to create a ripple effect of positive change. Having a safe space to live and grow allows Marya to embrace her childhood once again and look forward to brighter days ahead.
In our report released in March 2023 revealed that an overwhelming 9 out of 10 individuals in Northwest Syria, who had already experienced displacement at least once due to the conflict, were once again uprooted by the impact of the devastating earthquake. This finding sheds light on the tremendous challenges faced by the people in the region, as they had to endure multiple displacements and the consequences of the earthquake's aftermath. https://actionforhumanity.org/media/16788866493765446/No%20Place%20But%20Displacement-4.pdf?mc_cid=82df36fd9d&mc_eid=UNIQID
The humanitarian needs in the affected regions remain critical, with over ten million people still requiring urgent assistance. Medical care, psychosocial support to cope with trauma, and the provision of basic supplies in shelters and camps are among the essential needs that need to be addressed.
We are determined to continue our efforts and provide ongoing assistance to those affected by this disaster. Your support remains crucial in helping us make a difference in the lives of those who are most vulnerable and in dire need.
